Yesterday, while digging through some old files in search of a story I wrote a few years ago, I ran across this poem I wrote back in 1999.
As far as I can recall, it’s never been published. Likely because I don’t believe I’ve ever sent it out.
This poem touched a nerve last night. So I thought I’d share it here exactly as I wrote it back then with zero changes.
edited to add: It doesn’t want to post in the stanzas for some reason.

Are You Listening, 1999?
She is calling!
Are you listening?
It has started
and you weren’t looking.
Innocence, experience
Roll them up and save them in your pocket
They do you no good right now
Ears wide open
eyes shining bright
heart on your sleeve
Get ready for the ride!
Only those who understand
Will follow her to the new land
Lessons begun so long ago
worm their way back into your thoughts
Ideas that once made you laugh
become solemn oaths straight from the heart
though you dream
this isn’t real
your bed will no longer ease your pain
you cannot hide
you have to choose
what you’ll lose and what you’ll gain
The shift’s begun!
She’ll follow through
blinding those too closed to see
The ripple started…
The flood will follow.
Who will be left standing
In the new tomorrow?
