Stokercon is fast upon us!
One of the programming tracks at Stokercon is Horror University.
This is a series of courses that takes a deep dive into specific subjects.
This year, Andrew Robertson and I are teaming up to run a workshop called Read What You Wrote!
We are combining our skills and histories, using techniques from theatre, public speaking, therapy, and more, to help authors overcome fear and anxiety, or even just learn how to give a successful reading.
We will discuss the best ways to prepare for the day of the reading. Topics include picking a piece, building confidence, combatting anxiety, being heard, plus technical information such as dealing with mics.
The workshop will include a few exercises and discussions.
We will reserve time at the end for a few people to read a piece of no more than two paragraphs to the class. Please bring one or two paragraphs to read out loud if you want to read out loud at the end of the workshop. You don’t have to read out loud, it’s not a requirement.
At conventions, time changes or room changes can happen, so keep track on the Sched app just in case.
To sign up for Read What You Wrote, you go to the Eventbrite page for Stokercon and click Get Tickets. Even if you already have a ticket for Stokercon itself, you click the Get Tickets button, which takes you through to the next page. There you will find all the Horror University Courses as well as other convention activities. There you can click to order your course.
Pre-registration is required and encouraged. Currently, Write What You Wrote is offered on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at 3 pm.
See you in Pittsburgh!
